Windows 8 and memorex external dvd writer not compatible the young man at the store said Windows 8 is compatible with the memorex external dvd writer. However, it is not seeing my software that I am trying to install on my computer.
I'm trying to install Nero 12 software for using a Memorex DVD Writer 8x. I pop the cd in, begin the installation wizard and every time a window pops up about reboot validator and then a window pops up saying ' installation of system requirement validator has failed, set up will now exit.
This is driving me crazy! My sytem is Windows 7, but it's not even giving me a chance to change the compatibility to Windows 7. And I think it's ridiculous that after purchasing the software that I have to PAY for a tech support call!

Pros: Feels durable. Good plastic case, satisfying click when opening and closing the tray. Thin (relative to the internal drives I usually see).
Cons: Only rips CDs properly through proprietary software. Doesn't recognize certain discs. See other thoughts for details. Other Thoughts: MUSIC CDs: I can only rip CDs using the provided Nero software, which is more complicated than it should be. All I wanted to do was rip from WinAmp. When I tried to rip AC/DC's Rock or Bust, it wouldn't rip at all, leaving me with files of a few kbs on my computer. When I ripped a blues harp collection, it ripped the songs, but didn't find the song, artist, or album names, or any other info.
Only when I ran them through Nero did they rip fully, but not to with the file structure that WinAmp gives theirs, so I had to rename and reorganize the files. NERO SOFTWARE: The included software appears to be designed for imaging CDs and doing mass backups and such, which is all well and good, but not what I wanted. I just wanted to rip through WinAmp but I can't because I have to use Nero. There are two different Nero products to use; only one of them actually rips music CDs. It wants to be an all-in-one service for playing and downloading music. Frankly, I don't want it.
The disc that came with this says that it has the drivers and the Nero software on it, but there is no way I can find to separate them. It seems the drivers only install if you install Nero and the device only works properly through Nero. GAMES: First, I wanted to install the Unreal Anthology, but the disc wouldn't autoplay. I told it to play manually and nothing happened. As far as I can tell, this can't read the disc properly. The disc itself is in great condition and loads instantly on other computers with other DVD drives.

Then I tried to install Titan Quest. It read the disc instantly and installation was a breeze. I have tried no other games. MOVIES: Every movie I have popped in has worked perfectly.
I use MPC-HC as my default movie player. VERDICT: If one egg is for something entirely unusable, I would give this two eggs for being sort of useable, but begrudgingly so. It can work if I jump through all of its hoops and install all of its unnecessary software.
